169 ‘Report on 700 MHz LTE mobile devices for Europe’We conducted an analysis of the handset design issues arising from attempts to make a European 700 MHz band compatible with the existing Asia–Pacific band. This covered the RF filtering and coexistence issues, as well as the market challenges. This was used alongside other work to arrive at the current European (CEPT) plan for this band, which is expected to be approved in June.Ofcom has published our report alongside its consultation on plans to allocate the 700 MHz band for mobile use in the UK.

Report highlights studies relevant to technical licence conditions for the 2.6 GHz band. This accompanies Ofcom’s own consultation document highlighting their proposed licence conditions for both 2.6GHz and 800 MHz. The specific areas examined are:

  • The need to protect FDD base station receivers from interference from TDD systems operating in the restricted block of unpaired spectrum
  • The optimum frequency placement for low-power FDD access points (including femtocells, microcells and picocells)
  • Potential coordination rules to limit uplink and downlink interference to standard power networks from low power access points which share spectrum in the ‘hybrid’ approach which we examined in a previous report.
  • Issues which could constrain the number of licences for shared low power access.

A technical study by Real Wireless as an important element of Ofcom’s proposals to auction the 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz spectrum, which is ideal for LTE and WiMAX “4G’ deployments. In particular, we studied the opportunities for a portion of the 2.6 GHz FDD band to be used for ‘concurrent’ low power use by several operators, which would allow femtocells and other low power cell types to be used to deliver service, without needing separate spectrum for every operator.

“4G Capacity Gains”

This project aimed to identify the best available information on the relative increase in capacity for 4G systems relative to 3G, while carefully identifying the technical and demand factors which create variability in the results. The study largely consisted of desk research, collating and synthesising data on simulations, prototype trials and early deployments into a single report, available for download below. The project team additionally conducted a number of interviews with network equipment manufacturers and mobile network operators./p>

The projects findings include:

  • Initial deployments of 4G will deliver a 1.2 times improvement in spectrum efficiency over emerging, high end 3G configurations (i.e. 2×2 HSPA+ 64QAM release 8). Comparing against a typical, high end 3G device on the market in 2011, such as a HSUPA release 6 1×1 handset, gives a gain of 3.3 times.
  • The project forecast that spectrum efficiency in deployed networks will grow by approximately 5.5 times between 2010 and 2020
  • The project anticipates that network topology will become important to achieving capacity gains in 4G networks to a larger extent than in 3G networks.
